• 2001- : Research Director at the Institute for Historical Research, Department for Byzantine Research / NHRF.
• 1995-2001: Senior Researcher at the Institute for Byzantine Research / NHRF.
• 1990-1995: Research Associate at the Institute for Byzantine Research / NHRF.
• 1981-1990: Research Assistant at the Institute for Byzantine Research / NHRF.
• 1978-1980: Research Assistant at the Collège de France (chair of History and Civilisation of the Byzantine World).

TEACHING EXPERIENCE
• 2003: Associate Professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales (Centre of Byzantine, Neohellenic and Southeastern European Studies).
• 1995: Visiting professor at the Department of History and Social Anthropology (University of the Aegean).
• 1985-1986 and 1987-1990: Visiting lecturer at the Department of Philology (University of Crete).
• Lectures and courses given at Greek and British post-graduate seminar programmes.
