Dr. Michael N. Alexis, PhD, is Director of the Molecular Endocrinology Program (MEP) of the Institute of Biological Research and Biotechnology (IBRB) of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF). He obtained his Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Athens (1973) and his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of London - King's College, UK (1978). He was elected to a Research Lecturer's position at IBRB in October 1980 and was promoted to Research Director of the MEP in 1996. He served as director of the Biomedical Applications Unit of IBRB (1998-2009) and as member of the Hellenic National Council for Research and Technology (1999-2001). His research aims at: i) elucidating the prognostic and therapeutic significance of steroid receptors in endocrine-related degenerative disease, endocrine-related cancer in particular and, ii) developing estrogens, antiestrogens and neuroprotective agents of high breast and endometrial safety. He also maintains a strong interest on the genome-wide dynamic interplay of steroid receptors and other transcription factors that is underlying development of endocrine-related degenerative disease. His research is/was funded by GSRT-Greece, the EUREKA office and the EU. He has collaborated with pharmaceutical industry in several competitively funded projects and has filed 6 patents. He is in the Editorial Board of an international scientific journal and has authored more than 50 research articles in international peer-reviewed journals (Detailed CV).
