Apostolia Guialis is Research Director of the RNA Processing Program-IBRB/NHRF
She obtained a Diploma in Natural Sciences from the University of Athens, School of Physics-mathematics (1966) and a Ph.D. Degree in Molecular Biology from the Pennsylvania State University, Biophysics Department, USA (1974). She spent four years in the C.H. Best Department of Medical Research, University of Toronto, Canada, being the recipient of a post-doctoral fellowship from the C.H. Best Foundation. In 1978 she returned to Greece as a senior research scientist in the newly-established Institute of Biological Research and Biotechnology (IBEB/NHRF) and since 1986 she is the Group Leader of the RNA Processing Program. During the years 1998-1999 she spent eight months as a Visiting Scientist in the Karolinska Institute, Department of Cell and Molecular Biology, Stockholm, Sweden. She has been principal organizer of two international EMBO/FEBS Workshops, as well as reviewer in scientific journals. She participated in several competitive European and National projects and is the author of peer-reviewed publications and of chapters in scientific books. She had the direct supervision of several Ph.D. theses, as well as many Diploma dissertations for Biology students. Over the years, she has been lecturing in a number of graduate and post-graduate University courses.

Her research interest focuses on the structure/ function relationship of RNA-binding proteins playing a major role in post-transcriptional regulation, in mammals. The aim is to define novel networks of protein-protein and protein-RNA interactionsinvolved in mRNA processing events, as well as in the coordination and coupling of the regulated gene expression. Research is also performed on the participation of specific RNA-binding proteins in human pathophysiology, with respect to malignant transformation and autoimmunity.
