Alex Pintzas was born in Athens, Greece in 1958. He graduated from the Department of Chemistry and obtained his PhD in Molecular Biology, University of Athens in 1989. From 1989 to 1995 he worked as a Research Scientist at the CRC Beatson Institute for Cancer Research in Glasgow and in the CNRS- LGME (now IGBMC) in Strasbourg. Since 1994 he is Research Scientist and from 2002 Research Professor and Director of the Signal Mediated Gene Expression Laboratory in IBRB/NHRF. The Laboratory is active in the field of mechanisms in carcinogenesis vs. apoptosis and these projects are funded by European Union, Greek agencies as well as from private sources. He is a reviewer in eminent international scientific journals and of research proposals in EU and Greece and member of Advisory boards of International Consortia on Cancer. Dr Pintzas is a member of scientific societies, like the EMBO Fellows Network, the EU Marie Curie Organisation and the ELSO Career Development Committee. He has been participating in the organisation of EMBO/FEBS/ NATO Spetses Summer Schools since 1999 as well as of the 32nd FEBS Congress, Athens, 2008. He teaches in graduate courses on Molecular Oncogenesis and in post-graduate courses of Departments of Molecular Biology and has been member of several PhD committees.
