RESEARCH PROFILE
Dr Vassilis L. Souliotis has been a group leader at the Institute of Biological Research and Biotechnology, National Hellenic Research Foundation since 2001. His research interests focus on the investigation of the role of DNA damage and repair in the mechanism of chemical carcinogenesis as well as the application of molecular methods in the risk assessment from chemical carcinogens. As a model he uses alkylating agents: (1) N-Nitroso-compounds of environmental relevance which are suspected of playing a role in the causation of human cancer, and (2) alkylating cytostatic drugs (e.g. melphalan, cyclophosphamide), in order to assess the prospect of designing cancer chemotherapy protocols of improved efficacy through the optimization of the induction of cytotoxic DNA damage and to examine interindividual variation in the cellular DNA damage response as molecular marker for predicting differences in therapeutic response and long-term outcome. In the past he had conducted extensive similar studies on DNA damage and repair by certain methylating cytostatic drugs (procarbazine, dacarbazine).
