Vassilis Zoumpourlis obtained his Diploma in Molecular Biology from Faculty of Science, of the university J E Purkyne, Brno, Czech Republic (in 1987) and his PhD from the Medical School of Crete (in 1995). He joined IBRB as technician in January 1989 and he was promoted to functional scientist B in 1998 and functional scientist A in 2004 and Research Associate Professor in April 2006 . From late 2003 onwards he is supervising R&D activities of the Biomedical Applications Unit of IBRB. He was visiting researcher in the Cancer Research Centre of the University of Liverpool, UK, the Curie Institute, France, the Department of Human Genetics and Molecular Cell Biology, Medical Centre of the University of Leiden, Holland, the Division of Cell Biology of the Dutch Cancer Institute, Amsterdam, Holland, the Masaryk Memorial Cancer Institute, Czech Republic and the Paterson Institute for cancer Research, Manchester,UK. Recently he has nominated from Fulbright Foundation for a mutual exchange grant for research for research in UCSF Comprehensive Cancer Center, University of California, San Francisco, USA

He has experience in the study of molecular mechanisms and genetics of cancer. His current scientific interests focus on the role of AP-1 factors (mainly ATF-2), steroid receptors, p53 family members (p73) and Rho kinases in human cancer and in mouse skin carcinogenesis model.

To this day, he has authored 60 original publications and more than 80 presentations. He has been invited to participate in the organisation of several scientific congresses, to evaluate research proposals submitted to the GSRT, to review papers submitted for publication in international scientific journals, to give talks and seminars and to teach in post-graduate courses
