I. Aslanis was born in Thessaloniki in 1950. He graduated from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Faculty of Philosophy, Department of Archaeology and Art in 1973, did postgraduate studies in Balkan and European Prehistory in (West) Germany (Christian - Albrecht Universität Kiel and Freie Universität Berlin (West) and obtained his Ph.D from the Freie Universität of (West) Berlin in 1984.
He won scholarships from Institute for the Balkan Studies, Greece, the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, Germany, and the Deutsches Archäologisches Institut, Germany.
He worked as an assistant fellow in the Christian - Albrecht Universität Kiel (1978-1980) and as a Greek History and Greek Prehistory professor at the Demokritos University of Thrace (1995). Since 1985 he is a researcher at K.E.R.A. and since 1996 he works in the Veroia Branch of the Institute for Greek and Roman Antiquity.
He participated in the management and conduct of European research projects.
I. Aslanis is a member of the German Archaeological Institute.

Research interests

Prehistory of Northern Greece and Southeast Europe, especially in the Neolithic, Chalcolithic and Bronze Age Periods.

Major ongoing projects

• The Chalcolithic Period in Greece.
• Excavation at the Chalcolithic settlement of Yunatsite in Bulgaria in cooperation with Bulgarian authorities
• Excavation of the Bronze Age settlement of Agios Mamas, Greece in cooperation with the Freie Universität Berlin, Germany.
• Excavation of the Neolithic settlement of Promachon-Topolnitsa on the Greek-Bulgarian border, in cooperation with the local Ephorate.
