H. Brecoulaki was born in Athens in 1969. She graduated in 1992 from the Dept. of History of Art and Archaeology, University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne, (MA in Greek Archaeology) and in 1994 from the Dept. of Sciences and Techniques (MST in Preservation of Cultural Heritage). She obtained her Ph.D. in 2003 from the University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne (Doctorate in Classical Archaeology). She has worked as a Fellow and Research Professor at the Wiener Laboratory of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens from 1998 to 2006. In 2004 she received a post-doctoral scholarship from the Dept. of Classics at the University of Cincinnati, USA (Margo Tytus Visiting Scholar). She has collaborated with numerous institutions and material science laboratories in Greece, Italy and France in projects related to ancient Greek painting and polychromy. In 2007 the Academy of Athens awarded a prize to her monograph La peinture funéraire de Macédoine. Åmplois et fonctions de la couleur, IVe-aIIe siècles av. J.-C. , Meletimata 48 (Athens 2006). Since 2009 she is a researcher at the National Hellenic Research Foundation, as a member of the Northern Greece Programme at KERA/NHRF.
Research interests
Greek painting and the history of colour in ancient Greece; art and architecture in ancient Macedonia; Aegean painting iconography and technology; technology and uses of organic materials in ancient Greece; cultural heritage preservation policies.

. Demetrias-Pagasai/Museum of Volos: The Hellenistic painted grave stones. Research on color, artistic crafstmanship and techniques (in collaboration with the 13th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities)
. Thebes/Archaeological museum: The grave stone of ''Theodoros'', 1st-2nd c. AD. Analytical investigation of the painting materials (in collaboration with the 8th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities)
. Athens/National archaeological museum: The wooden tablets from Pitsa, 6th c. BC. Analytical investigation of the painting materials (in collaboration with the National Archaeological Museum)
. Pylos/Chora Museum: Documentation, conservation and publication of the Mycenaean wall paintings from the ''Palace of Nestor'' (in collaboration with the 38th Ephorate of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and the Dept. of Classics of the University of Cincinnati)
