Ο Γκαρθ Φόουντεν γεννήθηκε στο Norwich της Αγγλίας το 1953. Σπούδασε Ιστορία στο Merton College της Οξφόρδης, όπου και εκπόνησε την διδακτορική του διατριβή, με τίτλο ''Παγανιστές φιλόσοφοι στην κοινωνία της Υστερης Αρχαιότητος, με ειδική αναφορά στον Ιάμβλιχο και τον κύκλο του'', υπό την επίβλεψη του Henry Chadwick. Από το 1978 έως και το 1983 συνέχισε την ερευνητική του δραστηριότητα σε μεταδιδακτορικό επίπεδο στο Peterhouse και στο Darwin College της Κανταβριγίας. Από το 1983 έως και το 1985 δίδαξε Βυζαντινή και Νεοελληνική Ιστορία στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Groningen στις Κάτω Χώρες. Από το 1985 εργάζεται ως ερευνητής στο Κ.Ε.Ρ.Α., ενώ κατά καιρούς διεξήγαγε έρευνα και δίδαξε στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Princeton, στο Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton, στο Institute for the Humanities του Πανεπιστημίου του Michigan, και στο École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales στο Παρίσι.

• Η γέννηση του Ισλάμ σε σχέση με τον Ελληνισμό της Υστερης Αρχαιότητος και με το Ιραν των Σασανιδών, με ειδική αναφορά σε 1) υλικό πολιτισμό και 2) τη μετάδοση φιλοσοφικών ιδεών.
• Προβλήματα οριοθέτησης ιστορικών περιόδων: Υστερη Αρχαιότητα/Πρώτη Χιλιετία.
