M. B. Hatzopoulos was born in Athens in 1944. He graduated from Athens College in 1962, read for two years Economics at the Law Faculty of the University of Paris, graduated from the Classics Department of the Sorbonne in 1967, studied Mycenaean Philology and Greek Society and Religion at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes (Paris), obtained his Ph.D from the University of Paris I, Panthéon-Sorbonne in 1971 and his Habilitation from the University of Paris IV, Sorbonne in 1988. He has worked as a high school teacher of French, Latin and Greek in France (1967-1970), as editor and editor-in-chief at Ekdotike Athenon in Greece (1971-1979) and as a Greek History professor at the University of Paris X, Nanterre. Since 1979 he is a researcher at K.E.R.A., which he has directed since 1992. M. B. Hatzopoulos is a member of the Institut de France (Académie des Inscriptions et Belles Lettres), of the Athens Archaeological Society, the German Archaeological Institute etc. He has extensively lectured and carried out research in Europe and North America. For his work he has received the Bronze Medal of the Academy of Athens.
Research interests
History, institutions, epigraphy, topography, religion, linguistics of Macedonia and of adjacent areas (Epirus, Thessaly, Thrace). The interaction of past and present in modern Cyprus.
Major ongoing projects
Ancient Macedonia/Corpus of the inscriptions of the Third Meris (the area between Mt Bermion and the Axios river).
Changing views of the past in the troubled years of the Republic of Cyprus (1960-1974).
