M. Kalaitzi was born in Athens in 1974. She graduated from the Department of History and Archaeology, School of Philosophy, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (specialization: Archaeology and History of Art) in 1999. She obtained her MPhil in Classical Archaeology (2002) and DPhil in Classical Archaeology (2008) from the University of Oxford, as a scholar of the British Academy (Arts and Humanities Research Council), with the additional financial support of the I.F. Kostopoulos Foundation, the A.G. Leventis Foundation and the Archaeological Society at Athens. From 2003 until 2005 she held the Craven University Fellowship (Craven Committee, Faculty of Classics, University of Oxford) to work on her thesis as a visiting student at KERA. Since February 2009 she is a member of the Northern Greece Programme of KERA/NHRF.
Research interests
Ancient Greek sculpture and painting: modes of (self-) representation, especially in the Classical and Hellenistic periods, in relation to contemporary social history, funerary archaeology and iconography, epigraphy, focusing on ancient Macedonia.
