Kalliope I. Kritikakou was born in Athens, Greece,  in 1959. She studied  History and Archaeology at the University of Athens (1982) and specialized in the Greek epigraphy of Late Antiquity at the National Hellenic Research Foundation. She has worked as archaeologist at the Blegen Library of the American School of Classical Studies at Athens (1982-1984) and as the author of historical and archaeological articles for the encyclopaedia Papyros-Larousse-Britannica (1984-1987). She has also participated in excavations and surveys at the temple of Zeus at Nemea (Univ. of Berkeley) and at various sites on the island of Kea (Univ. of Athens). In 1985 she joined K.E.R.A. as scientific collaborator and from 1994 onwards as research associate of the Palestine Programme (in 2000 it was geographically extended and renamed the Greek East Programme) which mainly aims at the systematic collection, study and publication of the Greek inscriptions of Roman-Byzantine Palestine and Arabia. In carrying out this project she collaborates with scholars from Israel, Jordan and Egypt. Her current work focuses on the study of epigraphic material from the province of Third Palestine.

Research interests
History, epigraphy, society, religion of Late Antique Palestine and Arabia. Cultural and religious interaction among Greek, Jewish and Arabic populations of these provinces. Chronological systems used in inscriptions and papyri of Late Antique Palestine, Arabia and adjacent regions (Syria, Phoenicia).

Major ongoing projects

  • Corpus of the Jewish-Aramaic inscriptions discovered at Zoora, a Byzantine city of Third Palestine located southeast of the Dead Sea (in collaboration with Dr. Y.E. Meimaris/K.E.R.A. and Prof. Sebastian Brock/Oxford University).
  • Study of the Early Byzantine community of Zoora in the light of the recently discovered epigraphic and archaeological evidence.
  • Publication of Greek inscriptions from the province of Third Palestine (area of Southern Transjordan).
