Πτυχιούχος του τμήματος Ιστορίας και Αρχαιολογίας του Πανεπιστημίου Θεσαλονίκης (1968) με μεταπτυχιακές σπουδές, στο Παρίσι και στην Λυών (École Pratique des Hautes Études και Πανεπιστήμιο Lyon II-Lumières), στην ελληνική και ρωμαϊκή ιστορία, την επιγραφική και την νομισματική (1972-1980). Master και διδακτορικό δίπλωμα (thèse d'État), με άριστα, στην αρχαία ιστορία από το Πανεπιστήμιο Lyon II- Lumières (1979). Εργάστηκε ως ξεναγός (1966-1969) και καθηγητής μέσης εκπαίδευσης (1970-1972) στην Ελλάδα και αργότερα στη Γαλλία, ως δάσκαλος (lecteur) της ελληνικής γλώσσας και του ελληνικού πολιτισμού στο Πανεπιστήμιο Jean-Moulin-Lyon III (1974-1978) και ως βοηθός και μετέπειτα επιμελητής της αρχαίας ιστορίας στο Πανεπιστήμιο του Saint-Etienne (1978-1980). Με την επάνοδό του στην Ελλάδα δίδαξε, ως συμβασιούχος, στο Πανεπιστήμιο της Κρήτης (1980-1981) και από το ίδιο έτος προσελήφθη ως ερευνητής στο Κέντρο Ελληνικής και Ρωμαϊκής Αρχαιότητας του Εθνικού Ιδρύματος Ερευνών στο οποίο και υπηρετεί ως διευθυντής ερευνών από το 1992. Δίδαξε, ως επισκέπτης καθηγητής, στα Πανεπιστήμια της Lyon II-Lumières (1986/1987) και της Κύπρου (1996) και συνεργάστηκε (μεταπτυχιακά σεμινάρια στην ελληνική και λατινική επιγραφική) με το Πανεπιστήμιο Αθηνών (2002-2008). Υπήρξε προσκεκλημένο μέλος στο Institute for Advanced Studies του Princeton (19993/1994) και έδωσε, και κατά τη διάρκεια της παραμονής του στην νέα ήπειρο, σεμινάρια και διαλέξεις σε αμερικανικά και καναδικά πανεπιστήμια. Είναι μέλος της Αρχαιολογικής Εταιρείας, του Γερμανικού Αρχαιολογικού Ινστιτούτου και άλλων επιστημονικών Ιδρυμάτων και οργανισμών. Τιμήθηκε με το έπαθλο Desrousseaux της Revue des Études grecques για το βιβλίο του, Achaie I. Sources textuelles et histoire régionale (Aθήνα 1995) και με Χάλκινο μετάλλιο από την Ακαδημία Αθηνών για το σύνολο του επιστημονικού και διδακτικού του έργου.

Ερευνητικά ενδιαφέροντα
Αρχαία ελληνική και ρωμαϊκή ιστορία, επιγραφική, ρωμαϊκή ονομαστική, αρχαιολογία του τοπίου και σχέσεις υπαίθρου και πόλης, οικονομική και κοινωνική ιστορία των ελληνικών πόλεων και των ρωμαϊκών αποικιών της ανατολής κατά τη διάρκεια της ρωμαϊκής κυριαρχίας.
