Research Interests - Professional Activities
Social and cultural history of the period of the Greek Enlightenment and the 19th century. The Philhellenic Movement in the 19th c. History of the Greek Book and the Greek Libraries, 15th-19th c. Travel literature in SE Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, 15th-19th c. History of the Greek Press, 18th-20th c. Has read papers at more than 40 International and Local Congresses or Symposia.
1987--1997 Representative of the NHRF on the Standing Committee for the Humanities European Science Foundation. 1989- 1997 National co-ordinator, member of the Consultative Committee for the UNESCO Project:"Integral Study of the Silk Roads, Roads of Dialogue. 1990- 1997 Member of the Consultative Committee of the Revue des Etudes S.E.Europeennes. 1995-1997 Member of the Administrative council of the Greek General State Archives.

1981-1996	Project leader for two research programmes: 1. "INR. General Programme". 2. "Centres of learning in the Greek homelands, 15th - 19th.c. : the neohellenic libraries"
1988.--	Project leader of a research programme on "Travel literature on S.E.Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean, 15th - 19th c." and for the formation of a database.
1990 - 1993	Project leader of the project entitled:"Establishment of an information System for Modern Greek History with the use of New Technologies", financed by the Regional Development Plan.
1992	Representative of the INR as a proposed Associated Partner to the approved by the Commission Action Plan project HELEN on the "Investigation into Greek language transliteration problems" submitted by Kings College, London, the University of Crete and the University of Bradford, Department of Computing
1993-1994	Coordinator for the EE Community project Mobility Scheme - COPERNIC "Cooperation in Science and Technology with Central and Eastern European Countries. Human Mobility for Eastern Europe", in collaboration with Research Institutes in Romania, Bulgaria and France.
1995	Representative of the NHRF to the Workshop on "The Accountability of Scientists to Society" organised by the ESF programme "New Perspectives for Science in Europe".
1995-1998	Coordinator of the NHRF research group for the collaboration with the Polytechnical School of the University of Thrace to create a database entitled "Thracian Electronic Thesaurus" and a CD ROM.
1995-2002	Coordinator of a research project concerning the "Collection, Study and Electronic storage of the traditional music and dances of the thracian and macedonian area in Northern Greece".
1997-1998	Project leader of a research programme on the "Formation of Greek national identity seen through travel literature and translations in periodicals of the 19th century".
1997-2002	Project leader of a research programme on the History of the Greek press (1790-1990), the compilation of a database and the publication of an Encyclopaedia of the Greek Press.
