Ioannis Koubourlis was born in Athens in 1970. He studied Sociology (1988-92) at the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences where he obtained a Bachelors degree with first class honours. After graduating, he continued his studies in Paris at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales where he completed his D.E.A. (1993) on L'oeuvre de G. Skliros (1878-1919) : La première analyse marxiste de la société hellénique, and his Ph.D. in History (Tres Honorable avec les felicitations du jury a l'unanimite, 2000) on Recherches sur la formation de l'histoire nationale grecque : l'apport de Sp. Zabélios (1815-1881). He speaks English and French.
He has taught at the Hellenic Open University, the University of the Aegean and the University of Crete. Since September 2004, he is working as a Researcher at the Institute for Neohellenic Research (INR) of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) (Research program: ''Historiography, 15th-20th Centuries'') and he is in charge of the postgraduate seminar ''History of the Greek Historiography (18th-20th Centuries)'', co-organized by the INR/NHRF and the Department of ''Political Science and History'' of the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences.
He is a member of the Editorial Board of Dokimes Review of Social Studies and also member of the French Branch of the International Association for South-eastern European Studies.
His research interests include historical sociology, national history writing, political movements and ideologies in the Balkans and Europe (18th-20th centuries), especially nationalism and socialism. Since 2004 he is involved in a research project on the works of young Constantinos Paparrigopoulos (1843-1853) and the influence of various European schools of thought on the Greek national historical school.
