Eftychia Liata was born in 1951 in Ligourio, Argolida. In 1973 she graduated from the University of Athens (Faculty of Letters). During 1974-1976, after receiving an Athens Academy scholarship, she conducted research at the Istituto Ellenico di Studi Bizantini e Post-bizantini in Venice. In 1982 she took the Diplome d' etudes approfondies at the University of Paris IV. In 1986 she defended her doctoral thesis in Modern History at the University of Crete.
From August 1977 to July 1981 the Academic Committee of the National Bank of Greece assigned her the coordination and supervision of making a catalogue for the Historical Archive of the National Bank of Greece. During 1983-1991 she was responsible for organizing the Historical Archive of the Commercial Bank of Greece.
In 1993 Liata started working as a Research Associate Professor at the CNR/NHRF, in the programme "Mechanisms of rural economy in the Greek regions of the Ottoman empire and Venetian dominions, 15th-19th centuries", under the direction of Prof. Spyros Asdrachas.
She wrote books and articles on the history of Venice's Greek community, the economic and social history of the Greek lands under the Venetians and the Ottomans, and monetary history. Liata is expert in classifying and recording archives.
