Curriculum Vitae

Florin Constantin Marinescu

PUBLICATIONS

I was born in Romania, in 1946. I graduated from the University of Bucharest (Faculty of Philosophy, 1964-1969). PhD of the same University in 1983.

From 1970 to 1978, I worked at the Romanian Academy's Library (Bucharest), in its Department of Manuscripts, Documents and Rare Books, where I specialized in Romanian Cyrillic Paleography.

In 1978, I came to Greece with my family.

From 1979 to 2009, I worked without interruption at the Centre (later Institute) for Neo-Hellenic Studies of the National Foundation of Research in Athens.

Research Fields: 1) Greek-Romanian economical, spiritual and political relationships. 2) Relations between Romania and the Holly Mount of Athos. 3) Relations between Romania and the Epirus. 4) History of Greek Books. 5) History of Romanian Books. 6) Translations of books from Greek into Romanian. 7) Romanian History. 8) Hellenism in Romania.

Basic Research Directions within the Centre for Neo-Hellenic Studies:

1) Study and processing of the Mourouzi Archives (corpus Zaimi)
I classified all the archives (over 1200 documents written in many languages: Greek, Romanian, French, Slavonic, Russian, German and Hebraic). I prepared abstracts in Greek and French for 518 Romanian documents. The abstracts of all documents, together with their Introductions (one of them, written by me, on genealogical matters), their Indices and Glossary (to which I contributed directly), were published in one volume, in 1991. For the second volume, which is ready for print, I prepared the transcription of 237 Romanian documents.
In 1987, I published in French a book on the Genealogy of Mourouzi Family that has been awarded the Comnene Prize of the International Federation of Genealogy and Heraldic (Luxemburg, 1994). A Greek edition of this book is also ready for publication. About the same family, I have published eight studies (exploiting archives materials) and I have contributed to eight congresses and symposia. Their publication in Greek is awaited.

2) Romanian documents related to Modern Greek issues that are saved in Greek archives
Within the framework of the general research program of the C.N.S., in 1985, I started to deal with the identification and the scientific exploitation of thousands of Romanian documents that are saved in Greece, and mainly at the Holly Mount Athos (where, according to my investigations, there are about 30.000 Romanian documents - in a large sense). Their presence at the Holly Mount Athos is due to the close contacts between the rulers of Moldavia and Walachia, on the one hand, and the Protaton and each individual monastery of Mount Athos, on the other hand, within the general trend of an "imperial-like" policy practiced by them.
Within the frame of this research - which is still continuing even today, after my retirement - I have contributed to 23 Greek and international congresses and symposia, I have published eight books in Greek and two in Romanian, as well as 45 studies and articles (either by myself or in cooperation). Until now, I have investigated the archives of Protaton and those of the monasteries Megistis Lavras, Vatopediou, Iviron, Dionysiou, Koutloumousiou, Xiropotamou, Dohiariou, Simonopetras, Agiou Pavlou and Esfigmenou.

3) Translations of books from Greek into Romanian
Within the framework of the larger research program of the C.N.S., I had a part-time contribution aiming to identify which books have been translated from Greek into Romanian - from the mid 17th century up to 1918 - and in what way. I have identified more than 100 books in which there is a mention of their translation from Greek (either ancient or demotic). I have published two articles (see no. 26, 101) and I have submitted a contribution to an international congress (see Congresses, no. 15).

Relationships between Epirus and Moldo-Walachia (subject matter not belonging to my C.N.S. activities)
Epirus has always been a region with which the rulers of Moldavia and Walachia, Greeks or Romanians, as well as some of their dignitaries, had many and various relationships. One aspect of these close contacts was the devotion of monasteries and churches on Romania's present territory, as metoches to famous or less known monasteries in Epirus. I have participated in two congresses (see no. 36, 48) and I have published two studies (no. 80, 89).

The Greek presence in Romania (subject matter not belonging to my C.N.S. activities)
Very active during many centuries, with many social groups established in different regions of Romania, the Greek presence in this country has occupied me very much. I have participated in two congresses (no. 60, 61) and I have published three studies (no. 33, 58, 69). I have included this issue into my book The Romanians. Their History and Culture (pp. 234-254).

Total results of my scientific carrier (1973-2011) in publications: 15 books and 107 studies and articles, in Greek, Romanian, French and English.
