Sophia Matthaiou

PUBLICATIONS

Sophia Matthaiou was born in Athens in 1956. In 1978 she graduated from the University of Athens, Department of History and Archaeology. From 1980 to 1990 her study and research focused mainly on the reception of modern ideas in early 20th c. Greece, as well as on 1st World War veterans. She has participated in a number of research projects related to the study and classification of archival material. From 1990 to 1993 she was engaged in composing a detailed catalogue of the personal archive of Stephanos A. Koumanoudes (1818-1899).
In 2004 she obtained her doctorate from the University of Crete, Department of History and Archaeology, with a PhD thesis under the title: «Stephanos A. Koumanoudes (1818-1899): aspects of his life and work».
In 2005-7 she collaborated in the programme "Pre-industrial and industrial establishments and techniques in the Ionian islands in the 18th-20th centuries", as a post-doc researcher, conducted by the Department of History of the Ionian University (coordinator Eudokia Olympitou, Assistant Professor). She also engaged in research on the industrial production of paper in Greece (19th-20th centuries).
Since 1990 her research has focused on the study of contribution of 19th century intellectuals in the formation of the institutions and ideology of the newly founded Greek state. Since 1977 Matthaiou has been a member of the Society for the Study of Modern Hellenism. Since 2005 she has been teaching Greek History at the Open University in Greece. Since February 2007 she is Junior Research Associate at the Institute of Neohellenic Research at the National Hellenic Research Foundation (INR/NHRF) in the programme of «Literary History».
