Yanis Saitas was born 1949. He studied Architecture at the National Technical University of Athens (1967-1972), Town Planning at the University of Harvard and M.I.T., (1972-75) and Social Anthropology and Ethnology at the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (1982-1984).
He participated in the Greek National Tourism Organization's Traditional Settlements Programme for the preservation and development of villages in Mani (1975-1982). Since 1984 he has been working for the Institute of Neohellenic Research at the National Hellenic Research Foundation and since 1996 he is collaborating with Benaki Museum, being responsible for research and development projects in Mani. He has served as a consultant to the Greek Ministry of Culture on cultural heritage issues.
His research interests include the inter-relations between social formations and historical man-made environment, as well as issues of cultural identity, development and modernization. Saitas has published monographs and articles, edited books and exhibitions of historical material. His ongoing field work and research in Mani is combined with preparing plans, constructing buldings and programming development projects in collaboration with central and local authorities.
