RESEARCH SECTION II: ECONOMIC AND SOCIAL HISTORY
CO-ORDINATOR: Maria Christina Chatziioannou, Research Director
ASSIST. CO-ORDINATOR: Eftychia Liata, Research Director

The economic and social history constitutes a key area of research at the Institute for Neohellenic Research with origins in the post-junta period, which was a period of renewal of the research directions and activities of the Institute. The economic and social history studies the economies and the societies of the past. More specific, the economic and social history studies the mode of economic development in different countries and different historical periods, as well as the way the individuals, the households, the administrative and ministerial organizations have contributed and are still contributing to the economic change. Furthermore, the economic and social history studies the ways and conditions of living and working, as well as the establishment of settlements during the past time. The contemporary economic and social history has recognized the importance of an interdisciplinary approach in studying the past and applies concepts and methodological tools of other social sciences such as: business history, cultural history, economic geography and economic sociology.

THE HISTORY OF THE RESEARCH SECTION

The research section of Economic and Social History was structured in 2006 by the convergence and union of researchers from past programs and projects of the Institute for Neohellenic Research (INR).
The completed programs, their description and their first research directors were: "Mechanisms of rural economy in the Greek lands of the Ottoman Empire and the Venetian possessions, 15th-9th century" (Program director: Spyros Asdrachas). The program was divided into individual works with its primary objective being to highlight the mechanisms that determined the rural economy in the Greek regions of the Ottoman Empire and the Vanetian possessions. The case studies were, firstly, the geographic area of Serres in Macedonia and Argolis in Peloponnese, Thessaly, the island of Corfu in the Ionian and the island of Paros in the Aegean. The main documentation material was fiscal and juridical registers of all types (15th-19th century), as well as the monetary equivalents in the Greek region being occupied by the Ottoman Empire and Venice. The Ottoman registers of taxes constituted a research area of special interest from the outset of this program. Within the framework of the program and during the period of the years 1994-2007 a weekly seminar was held at the INR organized by Spyros Asdrachas (see: ΒίωσηκαικαταγραφήτουΟικονομικού.
