Research interests

His main fields of specialization are biochemistry, molecular biology, enzyme kinetics, X-ray protein crystallography and structure-based drug design. His major research interests are focused on functional and structural studies of enzymes involved in type 2 diabetes mellitus (glycogen phosphorylase, phosphorylase kinase, glucokinase and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase), nucleotide homeostasis (Adenylate kinase 6) and transmission of malaria (Odorant Binding Proteins from mosquito Anopheles gambiae).

Synopsis of scientific achievements

His scientific achievements are presented in 50 peer-reviewed articles (h-index: 21, i10-index: 35 Times Cited: total 1,237, without self-citations: 1.051),  3 reviews, 3 chapters in books, 40 oral /poster presentations in conferences and 21 short communications. Five of his articles were presented in the cover of the respective issues of scientific journals  Proteins, Acta Crystallographica F, Bioorganic & Medicinal Chemistry, European Journal of Biochemistry and Protein Science.
Dr. Zographos is registered user (since 1992) of the European Synchrotron Radiation Sources, Daresbury Laboratory, Daresbury, UK, Sinchrotrone Trieste, Trieste, Italy, EMBL, Hamburg-Outstation, DESY and Lund-MaxLab, and has carried out 48 visits for X-ray crystallographic data collection through grant applications.

Teaching experience

Dr. Zographos has significant teaching experience: As a visiting lecturer at the Chemistry Department of University of Cyprus, he taught Medicinal Chemistry, Biochemistry, X-ray Protein Crystallography (undergraduate courses) and Enzymology-Structural Biology as part of a postgraduate course. Furthermore, he has been co-organizer and/or tutor for eight workshops and two international scientific symposiums on structure-based drug design. He has supervised 4 MSc and 2 final year research projects and currently is supervising 1 PhD Thesis and 1 MSc research project.
