Authenticity of Foods and Beverages

Authenticity of virgin olive oil. The adulteration of virgin olive oil by other cheaper oils is studied using high resolution 13C NMR spectroscopy. The study is accomplished through EC competitive programs [EC GROWTH G6RD (2000-2004). Development and Assessment of methods for the detection of adulteration of olive oil with hazelnut oil. (Project coordinator: Dr. Ramon Aparicio, Instituto de la Grasa, Sevilla)] http://www.cica.es/aliens/igmedeo/

Authenticity of Cypriot beverage Zivania. A multidisciplinary study is under process between LMA, the University of Cyprus, School of Chemistry. The project involves the use of several physicochemical techniques and aims to a proposal formulation for the standardization of the Cypriot traditional libation Zivania.

Running project:
- Scientific and Technological Collaboration between NHRF - University of Cyprus 91/5 P-2002. (2003-2005). Proposal formulation for the standardization of Cypriotic Traditional libation Zivania.

Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) distinguishing zivanias of different origin or type (groups 1,2,3) among other traditional distillings originated from countries inside and outside Europe which are suited in the same category of spirits according the EC legislation (groups 4,5,6).

Reference Materials

SoftCRM: Software for the development of Certified Reference Materials

Correct measurements are essential to maintain and control quality of products and processes in research, manufacturing and trade. One of the most valuable tools to ensure comparability and traceability of measurements is the development of Certified Reference Materials (CRMs).

The certification process of CRMs includes the homogeneity study of the material, the control of its stability and its characterization i.e. the determination of the value of the property to be certified and the accompanying uncertainty.

''SoftCRM'' is a new software designed and developed by LMA, dedicated to support the complicated certification process through the recording and statistical processing of the data. The development of 'SoftCRM' has been supported by EC funding and is freely distributed through NHRF's web site: http://www.eie.gr/iopc/softcrm/index.html

Recently, the European Commission's institution in charge of the Certification and distribution of CRMs (Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements - IRMM/JRC) recognized the value and importance of this software and proposed few additions/modifications in order to adopt 'SoftCRM' as the official software for the Certification process. These modifications are currently under development through specific funding from IRMM/JRC.

The European Virtual Institute for Reference Materials (VIRM) www.VIRM.net

LMA is the National Contact Point for Greece of the VIRM project, i.e. an ICT European-wide consortium aiming to the dissemination of information and advice, know-how and help on Reference Materials and related fields. The objective of VIRM asbl is to evolve to an indispensable tool in Quality Control for analytical measurements.

VIRM asbl is THE meeting place for all Reference Materials users and producers.

The website of the Virtual Institute offers a wide range of useful tools as searchable databases for RMs and producers, consulting services, library of downloadable papers, guidelines related to RMs, QA/QC issues etc.
