CLOSERomans and Italians in Greece
Sophia Zoumbaki
The aim of the project is the gradual documentation and compilation of a prosopography of the Romans and Italians who migrated to the East, primarily for economic reasons, whose numbers steadily increased from the 3rd century BC onward. The study has advanced to the point of covering almost the entire territory of modern Greece, though the process of entering individuals into a database is ongoing and supported by targeted funding. More than 2,000 individuals have already been recorded in open-access databases. The project “Mobility and economic migration in the Mediterranean: Italians and Roman ‘entrepreneurs’ in the Greek world,” part of the program Anavathmis: Advancement of Historical Research – Studies and Digital Applications under the Operational Programme Competitiveness, Entrepreneurship and Innovation (EPAnEK) 2014–2020 – Strategic Development Action of Research and Technological Bodies, includes a database featuring a portion of the individuals already studied. Each entry in the database includes a detailed reference to the sources in which the individuals are attested (with links to the online texts, where available), chronological data, precise origin (when possible), and an analytical commentary on what is known or inferred about the person—their status, activities, family, and other connections.
