The aim of this research project is to advance our understanding of the still inadequately known historical framework of Cyprus’ relations with the Achaemenid Persian Empire, of which this eastern Mediterranean island was a subject from the second half of the 6th century BC until the time of Alexander. Work on this topic consists of a series of separate studies — including one in the form of monograph: A. Zournatzi, Persian Rule in Cyprus: Sources, Problems, Perspectives (MELETHMATA 44) (Athens: Institute of Greek and Roman Antiquity, NHRF, 2005) — which examine the literary, archaeological, epigraphic, and numismatic evidence concerning the political structure of Cyprus under Persian rule, the political, administrative, cultural, and economic relations between the Cypriot kingdoms and the Achaemenid world, as well as the role of the island in the broader context of the Greek-Persian antagonism.
