The project explores the history of the Athenian empire, that is the history of the Athenian control over the Aegean world during the 5th century BCE, through an examination of the literary, epigraphic, numismatic and material evidence. Our main aims are:

  • to produce a history of the development of the Athenian control over the Aegean territory, through a long historical lens, which includes the pre-history of the Athenian empire
  • to explore the local reactions to the Athenian imperial control, which includes (but is not exclusive to) the revolts
  • to examine the impact of the empire on the local communities (including a discussion of local agency as a reaction to Athenian control) and onto the Athenian imperial centre
