The Institute of Historical Research is organising an International One-Day Conference in Nafplio on October 9, 2025, with the kind support of Harvard’s Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece (CHS Greece).

The workshop aims to explore scientific topics related to mastery, apprenticeship, and the practice of know-how in the Eastern Mediterranean during the medieval period.

Its ultimate goal is to contextualize the selection of professions or skills based on societal needs, personal preferences, financial or social incentives, professional competition, and even non-applied knowledge.

Participants have been chosen to represent a wide range of themes, including literature, science, art and architecture, and manufacturing expertise.

Final remarks are expected to slightly by-pass common conclusions on economic or functional aspects of instruction and to focus on the over-time tendency for individuals to adapt to working and learning conditions influenced by their immediate environment and the needs of the time.
