A preliminary experimental digital print of the reconstruction of the Hunt Frieze from the tomb of Philip II at Aigai, at full scale, will be exhibited at the art space “16 Fokionos Negri”. In the same venue, the original works of the artist Emmanouil Bitsakis will be presented, which were utilized in the reconstruction.
The Hunt Frieze from the Tomb of Philip at Aigai (Vergina):
A Novel Interdisciplinary Approach for the Scientific Investigation and Revisualastion of a painted Masterpiece of the Classical World.
The Hunt Frieze, which Adams the frieze of the facade of the royal tomb of Philip II in Aigai, is the most significant and largest painting of the classical world discovered to date. The interdisciplinary project ReVis represents the first comprehensive and scientifically documented study of the wall painting of Aigai, utilizing pioneering, non-invasive diagnostic and imaging techniques. The ultimate goal of the research is to achieve a more accurate understanding of the technique and iconography of the wall painting as well as to propose a new digital reconstruction at its original scale, based on archaeometric data and combining artificial intelligence tools (Christos Simatos, visual artist) with contemporary artistic creation (Emmanouil Bitsakis, painter). Through this innovative study, new insights emerge regarding ancient pigments, painting techniques and the iconography of this emblematic wall painting from Aigai, shading light more broadly on monumental Greek painting of the 4th century BC.
The ReVis project is founded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation (H.F.R.I.) under the action of “2nd Call for H.F.R.I. Research Projects to Support Faculty Members and Researchers” with Dr. Hariclia Brecoulaki, principal researcher at the National Hellenic Research Foundation Institute of Historical Research, serving as the scientific coordinator. The project is being carried out in collaboration with the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, Institute of Nuclear and Particle Physics, led by Research Director Dr. Andreas Karydas, and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Imathia, with Dr. Anastasia Georgiadou, Head of the Department of Prehistoric and Classical Antiquities and Museums, as the on-site scientific coordinator.
Additionally, ReVis has secured access to the technologically advanced experimental infastructure of the European Consortium IPERION-HS/MOLAB.
