Infrastructure

ICB has recently acquired state-of-the-art scientific instrumentation and is currently considered one of the best equipped research institutes in Greece, particularly in the fields of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), Mass Spectrometry (MS) and X-ray Protein Crystallography. In addition ICB comprises recently remodeled and fully equipped laboratories for Synthesis, Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.

 

Large scale infrastructure and facilities

ΙCB maintains a proprietary compound library with bioactive compounds synthesized by ICB researchers suitable for screening campaigns against various biological targets.

The facility will be upgraded within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with a new spectrometer:

Equipment for protein sample preparation and analysis, including:

  • PCRs for gene cloning
  • Temperature controlled large capacity shaker incubators
  • FPLC- AKTA Purifiers
  • Multi-mode microplate readers for enzymatic and fluorescence characterization of protein-ligand interactions

The facility will be upgraded within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with the following equipment:

  • ZEISS LSM 980 confocal microscopy system with Airyscan 2 for 4D experiments with ultra-high resolution (operation in 2025)
  • System for in vivo fluorescence imaging of small animals (Φ-eye™ system, BIOEMTECH) (operation in 2025)
  • System for photoacoustic tomography and ultrasound Imaging (Vevo F2, FUJIFILM VisualSonics) (operation in 2025)

The facility includes:

  • NGS- Ion OneTouch 2 System, Tape Station system, Qubit 4 Fluorometer
  • Pyrosequencer, Real Time-PCR machines, cloning, electrophoresis and SSCP

The facitlity will be upgraded within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with:

  • System for next generation massive parallel sequencing

Fully-equipped facilities for cell, tissue and nematode C. elegans cultures including:

  • CO2 incubators
  • Constant temperature incubators (150 C, 200 C, 250 C)
  • Inverted microscopes
  • Stereomicroscopes and fluorescence stereomicroscopes
  • Biosafety cabinets
  • Automatic cell counter
  • Centrifuges and ultra-low temperature freezers

The fascility will be upgraded within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with:

  • BioTek Cytation C10, Agilent high-resolution confocal microscopy and multimode microplate reader with an automated microplate incubation device (BioTek BioSpa 8). (operation in 2025)

  • Flow cytometry analyser (Partec-CyFlow ML)
  • High speed multiparameter Cell Sorter BD FACS ARIATM II with 2 lasers (488, 633 nm).

The facility will be upgraded within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with:

  • An additional 375 nm laser source for BD FACS ARIA II and a liquid delivery pump in the main unit for cell isolation under sterile conditions. (operation in 2025)

  • Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectrometer (Bruker EMX Micro)
  • Dynamic Light Scattering analyzer (DLS) (Zetasizer Nano ZS, Malvern) with capability to measure hydrodynamic diameter, polydispersity index, and zeta potential
  • Franz Diffusion Cell
  • Liposome Extruder (Mini Extruder with Temperature Control, Avanti Polar Lipids)
  • High pressure homogenizer (Panda Plus 1000, GEA Niro Soavi);
  • Viscometer (Brookfield)

The facility will be upgraded within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” with

  • Small angle X-ray scattering array Xeuss 3.00 (Xenocs) (operation in 2026)

The Animal House Facility complies with national and international standards (ISO 9001:2015) and provides housing for mice and rats in specialized individually ventilated cage units (IVCs).

The Facility breeds or supplies laboratory animals for cutting-edge technology development, toxicity studies, preclinical research, and educational purposes.

The plant facilities are licensed by the Veterinary Service of the Ministry of Rural Development and Food (EL 25 BIObr 031 – breeding facility; EL 25 BIOsup 032 – supply facility; EL 25 BIO 033exp – research facility).

The facility spans 150 m² with 8 spaces and an antechamber, including quarantine area, furnace, cleaning, model construction, storage, operating room, and office. The air conditioning and environmental control system is fully automated, with remote and cloud-based operation, while the facility is monitored in real time.

The facility has been upgraded within the framework of National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0” and offers small animal imaging capabilities through:

  • Photoacoustic Tomography and Ultrasound Imaging (Vevo F2 system, FUJIFILM VisualSonics) (operation in 2025)
  • Fluorescence (Φ-eye™ system, BIOEMTECH).

  • Μultiprocessor Workstations (equipped with CPU and GPU)
  • Cloud-based infrastructure across Google Cloud Platform, Amazon Web Services, and public resources is leveraged.

The computing power of the infrastructure is being upgraded through access to the new High-Performance Computing facility of NHRF (816 cores, 2 GPU accelerators with 96 GB memory and 20,000 CUDA cores, system RAM: 3.5 TB, total storage capacity: ~1 PB) (funded under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan ‘Greece 2.0’, operation in 2025).

  • JASCO V-770 TA DMA 850 ultraviolet-visible-NIR (UV-Vis-NIR) spectrophotometer with humidity chamber (operation in 2026)
  • Inert atmosphere boxes with MBraun thermal evaporator and Enlitech external quantum efficiency (EQE), and Enlitech solar radiation simulator
  • Fluxim Paios all-in-one (operation in 2026)
  • RAMAN spectrophotometer with AFM/SNOM, WITec alpha300R (operation in 2026)
  • Small angle X-ray scattering array Xeuss 3.00 (Xenocs) (operation in 2026)
