Educational activities

The ICB serves as a center for education at the undergraduate, master’s, doctoral and postdoctoral levels, and thus plays an important role in the formation and training of the next generation of scientists. In this context ICB researchers trained several young scientists from Greece and abroad through research, lectures and practicals.

Postdoctoral Fellows

Postdoctoral Fellows constitute a key component of the ICB workforce. On average ~ 30 postdoctoral fellows per year were trained in the labs of ICB during the last 10 years. The Institute makes necessary arrangements for ensuring that they are well supported for their career development implementing a number of transfer of knowledge activities such as:

  • Participation in specialised network-wide events that enable the transfer-of-knowledge between members of the research teams, especially those from different disciplines or areas of research;
  • Exchanging knowledge with the members of other teams through undertaking visits and secondments;
  • Development of complementary skills related to research management via their possible involvement in the organisation of network activities and other aspects such as proposal writing, enterprise start-up, etc.;
  • Involvement in student supervision;
  • Involvement in the preparation of grant applications.

PhD Students

ICB researchers act as supervisors of Ph.D students or participate in the supervisory and examination committees. The ICB Ph.D students have been supported by national and EU competitive grants including Marie Skłodowska-Curie projects, NSF (IKY), HFRI (ELIDEK) and other scholarships.

MSc Programs

An important activity of ICB has been the coorganisation of 4 interinstitutional programs of Postgraduate Studies (MSc) with Greek Universities.

  • The flagship M.Sc program is Bio-entrepreneurship which is hosted by ICB and organized jointly with the Department of Biochemistry and Biotechnology of the University of Thessaly since 2015. The MSc in Bioentrepreneurship is the first postgraduate program in Greece composed of multi-component and transferable learning activities facilitating the development of scientific, business, and entrepreneurship skills in collaboration with a network of industrial partners. ICB researchers participate in the administrative bodies of this Master program.
  • ICB also hosts the interinstitutional Master program entitled Oncology: from oncogenesis to therapy, which is co-organized jointly with the University of Crete, Medical School. The program was started in March of 2019 and its object is the training of young scientists in modern approaches to detection, imaging and diagnosis of human tumors, translation and clinical research, cancer prevention strategies, the latest pharmacological treatments as well as precision and personalized treatment of cancer. ICB researchers participate in the administrative bodies of this Master program.
  • Biotechnology which is co-organized jointly with the National and Kapodistirian University of Athens, Department of Biology. MSc “Biotechnology” was established in October 2021 with the aim to produce trained staff for highly specialized positions in the public and private sector both in Greece and abroad. Examples include but not limited to entities that rely in Biotechnological processes for the development of innovative products and services such as the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics industries, producers of diagnostic and biomedical materials, the biorefineries, the agricultural and agricultural research companies and the diagnostic laboratories (private and public).
  • ICB is a partner in The Athens International Master’s Programme in Neurosciences which is co-organized jointly with the Departments of Biology, Nursing, Dentistry of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the School of Medicine of the national and Kapodistrian University of Athens in cooperation with the of Foundation Biomedical Research of the Academy Athens (BRFAA), the Hellenic Pasteur Institute (HPI), the Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” / (BSRC Fleming), the National Center for Scientific Research “Demokritos”, (NCSR- DEMOKRITOS) and the National Hellenic research Foundation (NHRF).

Furthermore, many ICB researchers teach in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Universities and Technological Institutions.

Undergraduate Students, Internships

Since 2018 >100 undergraduate Theses Projects and Internships have been implemented in the premises of ICB though collaboration with Academic and Research organizations. ICB also hosts students for internships through participation to ATLAS, Centralized Internship Support system for Greek Higher Education Students.
