ICB-NHRF is among the partners that will implement the recently approved Twinning Light Project between Greece and Serbia (Ministry of Science, Technological Development and Innovation), entitled “Strengthening capacities and introducing EU practices for sustainable operation and management of the Bio4 Campus”. The project will be implemented under the Annual Action Plan 2022 for Serbia, European Integration Facility (Twinning No.: SR 22 IPA SO 02 25 – Publication EuropeAid/185518/DD/ACT/RS). In Greece, the project is coordinated by the Center of International and European Economic Law and, in addition to the NHRF (scientific coordinator: Dr. E. Gonos, Director of ICB-NHRF), the Biomedical Sciences Research Center “Alexander Fleming” and the National Observatory of Athens are also participating.
Dr. Panagiota Papadopoulou has been awarded a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship (HORIZON-MSCA-2024-PF-01-01) for the project CryoLipNano, with a total budget of €197,263.68, which will be implemented at the Institute of Chemical Biology (ICB) of NHRF.
The project focuses on investigating the ultrastructure and intracellular trafficking of RNA lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) using advanced cryo-electron microscopy, imaging techniques, and proteomics. LNPs currently represent the most advanced and clinically approved platform for RNA delivery, yet only a small fraction successfully releases RNA into the cell cytoplasm.
The research project SPARTAN received the Seal of Excellence from the European Commission following the evaluation of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Postdoctoral Fellowships call (HORIZON-MSCA-2025-PF-01-01) under the Horizon Europe programme.
The project aims to develop the first organic-based high-performance photodetectors and imaging systems for the shortwave infrared (SWIR) spectral range, using flexible and sustainable organic semiconductors. It will be coordinated by Dr. Chochos at the ICB/NHRF, with a total budget of €4,051,000, bringing together a consortium of 10 leading academic and industrial partners across Europe, including Imperial College London, The University of Manchester, The University of Edinburgh, Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research, Martin Luther University of Halle-Wittenberg, Universidade da Coruña, and the National Technical University of Athens.
The second EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer JANE-2 (2024-2028), involves 133 organizations from 29 European countries. It is coordinated by Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale dei Tumori (INT), Italy, and co-funded by the European Union with 40.5 million EUR.
JANE-2 project aims at building seven Networks of Expertise (NoEs) in the area of oncology that will transform the way cancer care will be delivered at EU level.

The second Joint Action (JA) of the EU on Networks of Expertise on Cancer (JANE-2) was launched in Milan, Italy, on January 28-29, 2025. The project is a follow-up of the JA JANE (2022-2024) (https://jane-project.eu) and is coordinated by Italy through the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Milan, involving 121 partners from 29 European countries and co-financed by the European Union (EU) with 40.5 million euros. Greece is represented in JANE-2 by the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) as participating institutions.

ENHANCE-SKIN
Organised in the context of the COST ACTION 2111-OneHealthdrugs – “One Health drugs against parasitic vector borne diseases in Europe and beyond” https://onehealthdrugs.com/.
The workshop seeks to provide up to date information and integration strategy on sustainable drug discovery for vector borne diseases (VBDs). Special emphasis will also be given to new targets for VBDs and methods to study their engagement as well as on biodegradability and toxicity aspects pinpointing the effect on the environment.
The event is open to PhD, young innovators and senior scientists from both academia and pharma.
The National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) participates in the implementation of the “EU Joint Action on Networks of Expertise”. Within a 2-year period, JANE aims to establish seven new Networks of Expertise (NoEs) in the cancer field, able to function effectively, building on previous and ongoing EU networking experiences, and finding solutions rooted in the European oncology community.
