Numismatic Meetings

The Numismatic Meetings are co-organized by the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF), and the French School at Athens (École française d’Athènes – EFA).  The aim of the seminar is to demonstrate the strength of / to highlight the dynamic character of the numismatic research in Greece by pointing out/ emphasizing the links and interactions of the discipline with history and archaeology. Every source and method related to numismatics will keep the attention/ fall within the scope of the seminar: technical aspects, metrology, iconography, monetary, financial and economic history.

Seminars on Greek and Roman Antiquity

The Seminars on Greek and Roman Antiquity aim at presenting the most recent findings of research on the ancient Greek and Roman World, as well as on the wider region of the Eastern Mediterranean. They aspire/seek to engage all disciplines relating to the study of the ancient world, focusing both on the written sources and on the material evidence, through the participation of experienced as well as younger scholars. The seminars are co-organised by the Institute of Historical Research of the NHRF, the Department of History and Archaeology of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens and the École Française d’Athènes, and intend to encourage discussion between scholars of different/diverse disciplinary backgrounds. The Seminars are held monthly and are hosted every year by one of the three organizing institutions.

Lectures in Byzantine Studies

Since 2022, the Section of Byzantine Studies of the Institute of Historical Research has organized an annual series of monthly Byzantine Lectures. Distinguished scholars of Byzantium from around the world present their recent research on History, Archaeology, Art, and Literature (4th-15th centuries). The lectures take place from September to June at the National Hellenic Research Foundation, but can also be attended online.

Byzantine Meetings

The Byzantine Meetings is a workshop co-organized every year since 2023 by the Institute of Historical Research (IHR), the French School of Athens and Haoma UMR 5189 (CNRS). The workshops, dedicated to different topics each year, are attended by researchers from these institutions as well as from all over the world. The aim of the workshops is to promote cooperation between the two major Byzantine research centres based in Athens and with the CNRS. The lectures take place at the National Hellenic Research Foundation, but can also be attended online.

Annual ‘C. Th. Dimaras Lecture’

Since 1996, the Institute of Historical Research (Section of Neohellenic Research) has organized an annual lecture in memory of the eminent historian K. Th. Dimaras — one of the Institute’s founders and a pioneer in the development of Modern Greek Studies, particularly in the field of the Modern Greek Enlightenment. This prestigious event brings together internationally renowned historians, who are invited to present on topics related to the Enlightenment and other key issues in European history and culture.
