In addition to its regular annual series of academic events, the Institute of Historical Research (IHR) also organizes a wide range of additional conferences, symposia, and lectures as part of funded research projects, institutional collaborations with other organizations, and the hosting of visiting scholars.
Over the past two years, the following ad hoc scholarly events have been organized:
- June 5–6, 2025: Co-organization with PIOP (Piraeus Bank Group Cultural Foundation) and other academic institutions of the 10th Environmental History Workshop: “Energy Economy: Energy Sources and Their Management”, PIOP Historical Archive (IHR organizing committee members: G. Vlachos, S. Zoubaki, A. Panopoulou).
- October 10, 2024: Workshop “Texts and Objects Nobody Has Heard Of”, National Hellenic Research Foundation (organized by K. Smyrlis, S. Papagiannou [IHR], and Y. Rotman, Visiting Professor [Tel Aviv University]).
- (July 4–7, 2024): Academic Conference “Psara: The Place and Its People” on the occasion of the 200th anniversary of the Holocaust of Psara. Co-organized by the IHR, the Municipality of the Heroic Island of Psara, and the National Historical Museum; held in Psara.
- June 4–5, 2024: Co-organization with PIOP and other academic institutions of the 9th Environmental History Workshop: “The Lungs of the Earth: Forests, Urban Forests, Groves, and Garden Cities”, PIOP Historical Archive.
- March 21, 2024: Co-organization with the Agricultural University of Athens and the Department of History and Archaeology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki of the workshop “Local and Indigenous Varieties: A Valuable Millennial Heritage Facing Modern Challenges” (IHR organizing committee member: M. Leontsini).
- March 29, 2024: Presentation of the project “Digital Routes on the Paths of Greek History”, RoGH (NHRF) (organized by V. Antoniadis, G. Koutzakiotis, N. Livanos, G. Merianos).

- November 29, 2024: Seminar by Cecilia D’Ercole, Visiting Professor (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris), titled “Circulation of Knowledge, Skills and People across the Mediterranean during the Archaic and Classical Periods”, Seminar Room, NHRF.

- May 24–25, 2025: Workshop “Alchemy in Byzantium: Exploring a Fascinating ‘Art’”, organized by the Harvard University Center for Hellenic Studies in Greece, the IHR/NHRF, and the Pavlos and Alexandra Kanellopoulou Museum (academic coordinator: G. Merianos), held in Nafplio.
- January 31, 2024: Lecture by Jake Ransohoff (Postdoctoral Fellow at the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, Princeton), titled “The Origins of Political Blinding in Byzantium”, Room 524, IHR.
- March 4, 2024: Academic meeting “Byzantine and Latin-Occupied Tinos: Old and New Archaeological Data. Preliminary Results from the 2019–2023 Period”, “Leonidas Zervas” Auditorium, NHRF (organized by A. Yagkaki).
- March 4, 2024: Lecture by Vanessa R. De Obaldía and Elias Kolovos titled “Athonite Archival Heritage: Unique Documents from the Ottoman Archive of Simonopetra Monastery”, part of the project “Archives of Mount Athos”, Seminar Room, NHRF (organized by N. Livanos).

- April 1, 2024: Book presentation “Byzantium, History, and Culture: Research Findings” (academic director: Tilemachos K. Loungis, in collaboration with Ewald Kislinger / D. Lampada, coordinator: G. Merianos).
- June 10, 2024: International Symposium “Making Alchemical Knowledge: From Antiquity to the Middle Ages” (co-organized by IHR/NHRF and the Princeton Athens Center for Research and Hellenic Studies), NHRF (organized by G. Merianos and J. M. Rampling).
- November 27, 2024: Scientific workshop “Complex Realities: Medieval Pottery Contexts in the Eastern Mediterranean (7th–15th c. CE)”, co-organized by IHR/NHRF, the Austrian Archaeological Institute of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (organized by A. Yagkaki [IHR]).

- February 11, 2025: Scientific Workshop “Biographing the State: Research and Infrastructures”, co-organized by IHR (D. Dimitropoulos) and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (V. Seirinidou), as part of the HFRI research project “Biographing the State: A Digital Prosopography of the Greek Public Administration (19th c.)” (BioState).
- June 6–8, 2024: Conference “Sciences, Ideologies, and Religions in 20th Century Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe”, co-organized by IHR (K. Tampakis) with the Masaryk Institute and Archives of the Czech Academy of Sciences, the Chair for History of Science (University of Erfurt), the Faculty Center for Transdisciplinary Historical and Cultural Studies (University of Vienna), and the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe.
- April 26, 2023: Workshop “Science, Atheism, and Anti-Communism”, co-organized with ASKI/NHRF, Athens.
- September 15, 2023: 2nd Conference of the International Academy of the History of Science, Athens, Greece, co-organized with the International Academy of the History of Science.
