Podcast: ΙστορΙΙΕς

In this new series of podcasts, Christy Constantakopoulou, Senior Researcher of the Institute of Historical Research, discusses historical topics, from antiquity till the 20th century, with other members of the Institute. Why did ancient Greeks inscribe texts on their tombs? What did the refugees do when they arrived at Drapetsona? Were the ancient Macedonians Greek? What did the alchemists in Byzantium really do? These are some of the topics we address in this series of podcasts. Our aim is to showcase the work done by the researchers of the Institute of Historical Research and to provide a platform aimed at the general public for learning of new studies and works.

In this podcast, Christy Constantakopoulou, Senior Researcher in the Institute of Historical Research, and Vyron Antoniadis, Senior Researcher in the Institute of Historical Research, talk about the history of Delos during the archaic and classical periods. Why was the island of Delos so famous? Why are there temples on the island? How did the Delians live? Were they truly ‘parasites of the gods’, as ancient testimonies attest? How did the Athenians impose their control over the administration of the sanctuary and over the lives of the islanders?

Solon and the Removal of Debt (seisachtheia)

In this podcast, Vyron Antoniadis, Senior Researcher in the Institute of Historical Research, and Christy Constantakopoulou, Senior Researcher in the Institute, discuss Solon’s legislation. In the early 6th century BCE, Athens went through a massive economic and social crisis. Solon, who was famous for his poetry, was elected leader (archon) of the Athenians in order to solve the crisis. The political and economic legislation that he put forward created the foundations for the later transformation of the Athenian constitution into radical democracy at the end of the 5th century BCE. We talk about the reasons for the crisis, about the creation of debt, and how debt resulted to social and economic instability and political crisis.
