Podcast: ΙστορΙΙΕς

In this new series of podcasts, Christy Constantakopoulou, Senior Researcher of the Institute of Historical Research, discusses historical topics, from antiquity till the 20th century, with other members of the Institute. Why did ancient Greeks inscribe texts on their tombs? What did the refugees do when they arrived at Drapetsona? Were the ancient Macedonians Greek? What did the alchemists in Byzantium really do? These are some of the topics we address in this series of podcasts. Our aim is to showcase the work done by the researchers of the Institute of Historical Research and to provide a platform aimed at the general public for learning of new studies and works.

3. Funerary Inscriptions

In this podcast, Giorgos Athanasiades, PhD student (Athens University) and Research Associate of the Institute of Historical Studies in the funded programme ‘Inscriptions of Macedonia’, talks about the funerary inscriptions between the 3rd century BCE and the 3rd century CE. Why did ancient Greeks write inscriptions on their tombs? What kind of information did they record on these texts? Funerary inscriptions reveal unknown aspects of ancient Greek life, such as the relations between married couples and whether the Greeks loved their pets.
