CLOSEProduction, Processing and Distribution of Agricultural Products in Peloponnese from the Middle Byzantine to the Late Byzantine Period

The aim of the project is the recording and geographical mapping of agricultural production and its manufacturing and commercial exploitation in the Peloponnese during the Middle and the Late Byzantine periods. With a view to highlighting the changes that had a negative and positive impact on the agricultural economy ‒such as natural disasters, military conflicts, human interventions in the landscape, technological advancements, consumer behavior, and increased demand for specific products‒ the project will address the following key areas:
- the type, species, varieties and quantity of agricultural, livestock, forestry and marine products,
- the processing and industrial infrastructure and agricultural tools, and
- the commercial centres ‒ local and Mediterranean ‒ involved in the distribution, storage, packaging, and transport of products from the Peloponnese and their derivatives
The starting point for this project was the research conducted for the development of the databases created within the framework of two research projects (Kyrtou plegmata – Krepis program and Anavathmis program) of IHR/NHRF “Agricultural networks for the production and distribution of products in the Peloponnese during the Byzantine period”: https://kripis2.anavathmis.eu/2-9/ and “Raw Materials, Natural Resources and Agricultural Products. The results of the project are planned to feed the compilation of studies and an interdisciplinary volume.
