The research activities of the research direction focus on the study of the Greek mainland and Asia Minor. They are grounded in the systematic collection, documentation, and interdisciplinary analysis of evidence drawn from both written sources and archaeological investigations. The primary objective is to build a robust research infrastructure and to utilise it in synthetic studies addressing issues related to the organisation and uses of space. In so doing, the historical development of individual places, the distribution of population groups and the factors that determined the changes in the functioning of cities, their relations with the countryside and communication (mainland and island) are all open to be examined. To advance these objectives, partnerships have been established throughout Greece with professional archaeologists, local Ephorates of Antiquities, foreign archaeological schools, and other relevant institutions.
Members of the division have actively participated in the planning and implementation of European-funded research projects, and they also carry out projects supported by Greek funding bodies. In addition, they have organized academic conferences, workshops, and lecture series aimed at both scholarly audiences and the wider public. They have also contributed to initiatives such as the KRIPIS programme (NSRF, 2013-2015) and Anavathmis (NSRF, 2017-2021), through which they have developed digital tools that provide valuable resources for the academic and educational community.
