The Venetian period in Greek history has been the subject of scholarly investigation since the early decades of the nineteenth century. This research, which engaged both Greek and foreign scholars, intensified towards the end of the same century. Within the framework of this project, the extensive literary output of the period is examined. Emphasis is placed on the research expeditions undertaken in the early twentieth century by the Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Gerola in Crete, the Ionian Islands, the Cyclades, and the Dodecanese. These expeditions focused primarily on the systematic recording of the landscape, archaeological sites, and monuments dating to the Venetian period. Nevertheless, they were also closely tied to the political agendas of the time.
