This research programme focuses primarily on the study of the state institutions of the middle Byzantine Empire. It examines the various state offices, the system of titles and the imperial hierarchy, as well as the provincial administration of Byzantium, with a particular focus on specific regions of the Eastern Mediterranean. Ultimately, it seeks to trace the overall development of the administrative structure of the Byzantine state.
