This study aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the feudal elite of Crete at the political, social, and economic levels, and to situate this class within the broader historical context of Venice and other Italian city-states. The chronological framework begins with the initial settlement of colonist fief-holders on the island in 1211 and concludes with the outbreak of the Revolt of St Titus in 1363, a pivotal event that brought about substantial changes in the political role of the feudal class.
The project serves as a synthetic continuation of two ongoing research initiatives:
- The Venetian Cadastres of Medieval Crete (Catastici Feudorum Crete), 13th-15th Centuries. Text edition, study, and electronic processing.
- Prosopography of the Greco-Venetian World, 13th-17th Centuries. Part A: Crete: The People of the 13th Century (Database project).
