Developed under the RoGH project—a collaboration among the Department of Informatics and Telecommunications at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation, and Content Management in Culture (COMIC)—the prototype application Digital Routes highlights pivotal periods and events in Greek history through an immersive exploration of space and time. The platform ingests digitized content and multimedia assets—2-D, 3-D, holographic, and more—renders them in a virtual-reality environment, and enables users to embark on an experiential journey that traces the continuous historical trajectory of Hellenism from antiquity to the present day.

Upon activation of the application and the use of a virtual-reality headset, users—guided by an interactive timeline—may chart individual routes through the course of Greek history and acquaint themselves with major historical events by undertaking virtual visits and tours of Greece’s historic sites. They can retrieve additional information, search for and locate historical events, sites, and noteworthy objects according to specific terms or chronological criteria, and they may append commentary so as to create a personalized “information trail.” The timeline’s adaptive structure permits both open-ended exploration and immediate, immersive access to Greece’s historic sites. Along this diachronic itinerary, users encounter texts, photographs, videos, and three-dimensional reconstructions, yielding an experience that is at once instructive and engaging for audiences of all ages.
