CLOSEImmured Vessels in Churches of Greece: A Digital Corpus
Anastasia G. Yangaki
The project is prepared in direct collaboration with the local Ephorates of Antiquities of the Ministry of Culture and Sports. Its purpose is to record in a single electronic database the glazed vases that are built into the external faces of Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches in Greece. For the needs of the project, visits are made to monuments and the relevant archaeological material recorded. In addition to entering the information in the program’s database, studies are being prepared on the immured vessels in monuments of specific areas (See Publications). Interest is concentrated in the regions of Peloponnese, Attica and Crete.

- Study and Publication of Immured Vessels in the Churches of Crete: As part of the ongoing project, monographs are being prepared to document and present the glazed vessels immured in the monuments of Crete. The material spans a broad chronological range, from the 12th to the 21st century. The volume covering the regional unit of Chania has already been published.

- 2022:The “Avrilia Komninou” Award of the Section of Letters and Fine Arts was awarded by the Academy of Athens to Anastasia G. Yangaki for her study entitled “‘Speaking Ceramics’: Bacini as Containers of Hidden Messages and Expressions of Memory”. The study was originally submitted anonymously and in unpublished form. It was later published in Byzantina Symmeikta, vol. 32 (2022), Appendix, 1-122, and is accessible at the following link: https://ejournals.epublishing.ekt.gr/index.php/bz/article/view/29676.
