The study aims to contribute to the scholarly discourse on governance and sovereignty in the Venetian Maritime State during the late Middle Ages through a comparative analysis of the Commissions issued to the Dukes of Crete. These normative texts which defined the duties and rights of the senior Venetian administrator on the island, provide valuable insights into the development of the administrative framework and the dynamics of power during this period.
