The research area Everyday and Social Life of the Byzantines (KKBB) originates from the homonymous Program, established in 2000 to study aspects of practical life in Byzantium. Over time, it was enriched with themes engaging with social and cultural anthropology, seeking to address new questions through modern interdisciplinary approaches.

The former Institute of Byzantine Research (IBR, formerly KBE) organized international conferences on Daily Life and Communication in Byzantium, whose proceedings have become fundamental bibliographic resources. A similar impact was achieved by the international conference Byzantium Matures: Choices, Sensitivities, and Modes of Expression (eleventh to fifteenth centuries),  which explored the emergence of personal expression in the late Byzantine era as reflected in literary and visual culture (Christina Angelidi).

Further research has focused on documenting practices related to the production, processing, packaging, and preservation of agricultural products. Notably, studies on the history of the olive tree, olive oil, and wine in the Eastern Mediterranean have produced significant publications (Ilias Anagnostakis).

Over time, new topics such as the history of economic thought and the history of science were incorporated, resulting in monographs, articles, and presentations at international conferences (Gerasimos Merianos).

Specialized research also addressed various aspects of Byzantine alchemy. In 2018, this activity developed into an independent Program titled Alchemy in Byzantium (Gerasimos Merianos).

Research Projects

Within the framework of the Everyday and Social Life of the Byzantines (KKBB), various research projects—both ongoing and completed—address distinct thematic areas. As part of these efforts, open-access databases have been developed to systematically compile evidence related to food preparation and Byzantine gastronomy, as well as Byzantine data concerning domestic and wild fauna in the Helladic region.

Ongoing projects

Funded Completed Projects

  • Byzantine Art and Thematic Channel on Europeana ([Stylianos Lampakis], Maria Leontsini)
  • Program “Byzantine Art and Archaeology. Thematic Channel on Europeana, CEF Telecom–Call Europeana (CEF–TC–2016–3)” coordinated jointly with the University of Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum – Università di Bologna (https://pro.europeana.eu/project/byzantine–art–and–archaeology, 1 September 2017 to 28 February 2019).

Databases – Websites

Within the framework of the Program, the following projects have been carried out, planned or are under preparation. At this stage, the following open access databases have been developed and continue to be enriched, which were initiated by the ANAVATHMIS Program / Development of Historical Research – Studies and Digital Applications:

Chrysothemis, Byzantine Gastronomy

The project was designed and developed in the framework of the research project ANAVATHMIS. Development of Historical Research: Studies and Digital Applications. The aim of the project was to collect and study material related to food preparation and especially gastronomy, and its recording in a database.

The scientific findings of the project are being presented at international conferences and in scientific publications.

Abstracts

Domestic Fauna and Wildlife in Greece, 7th-14th Centuries

Maria Leontsini, 2017-2025

Open access database designed and started to be developed within the framework of the research project Anavathmis. Development of historical research. Studies and digital applications. The database contains information from Byzantine sources (archival documents, historiographical texts, lives of saints) and seeks to identify the strategies for the exploitation of livestock, wild fauna and fishery resources. Material concerning perceptions, symbolism and allegories about animals is also recorded.
