The Aegean region is marked by economic and monetary fragmentation. Although powerful states—initially Aegina and later Rhodes—came to dominate, the smaller island mints did not vanish but instead became integrated in various ways into the wider circulation network. This pattern is confirmed by circulation studies already completed in two distinct monetary zones: the central Aegean, with a focus on the Cyclades, and the southeastern Aegean. Research is currently continuing in the region of the northern Aegean.
