Due to its position at the intersection of major routes—both maritime, connecting the Mediterranean with the Black Sea, and overland, linking Europe with Asia Minor and the Aegean coast with the north—Thrace early on became a zone of dynamic contact, at times marked by conflict, but also by coexistence among peoples of diverse ethnic origins and political organization. This project explores the historical development of the Greek colonies founded along the coasts of the Aegean, the Propontis, and the Black Sea from the 7th century BC onward, the numerous Thracian tribes active in the interior, and the political, economic, and other forms of interaction that developed among them over the centuries.
