The section

The Section of Greek and Roman Antiquity was founded in 1979 as the autonomous ‘Center for Greek and Roman Antiquity’ within the National Hellenic Research Foundation by the later member of the Academy of Athens, Michalis B. Sakellariou, with the aim of creating a nucleus for the systematic study of antiquity. A conscious choice of the founder and the first researchers who staffed it was to place particular emphasis on thematic areas and chronological periods where the lag in research offered fertile ground for a meaningful Greek contribution to the international scholarly field of classical studies. The Section of Greek and Roman Antiquity brought new vitality to Greek historiography, consistently remaining at the forefront of international historical research. It has engaged in dialogue and collaboration with institutions from around the world, staying informed about developments, trends, and new methodologies that are constantly enriching the historian’s arsenal.
