CLOSEDigital Historical Atlas of Greek ‘Micronesia’: Mapping the Northern Dodecanese – HAGMi
George Koutzakiotis
The Project aims to create the application “Digital Historical Atlas of Greek ‘Micronesia’ (HAGMi), which highlights the history of the small Greek island territories of the Aegean Sea diachronically, as well as their multiple connections with their wider area through the centuries, with the aim of ‘integrating’ them into the history and culture of the Archipelago. More specifically, the Project attempts a holistic historical-geographical approach to the Greek ‘Micronesia’ of the Aegean, studying all the islets from antiquity to the modern era. This is achieved by systematically collecting and combining all the data that could be used (geographical, historical, archaeological and toponymic) and in parallel with the geographical depiction of all the island territories in all possible versions. The Northern Dodecanese, which is an area of the Aegean characterized by a large number and density of small island territories, constitutes the case study for the design of the HAGMi digital application, which intends to gradually cover the whole Archipelago.
