The project seeks to publish, for the first time, a complete diplomatic edition of the Ottoman documents from a Mount Athos monastery, following the model of the emblematic Archives de l’Athos series of the Collège de France. The Ottoman Turkish documents preserved in the archive of the Simonopetra Monastery will be edited and published by the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation. This will be realised in a multi-volume series, providing both a complete edition and translations into English and Greek. The project is carried out by a dedicated research team comprising Research Director Elias Kolovos and Dr Panagiotis Kyranoudis (monk Kosmas Simonopetritis). These documents offer crucial insights into the special legal and administrative status of the monasteries of Mount Athos under Ottoman rule.

The project also aims to develop a digital edition of the documents, applying best practices in the field of digital humanities. This endeavour forms part of the broader strategy of the Institute of Historical Research of the National Hellenic Research Foundation (IHR/NHRF) to establish a repository for the digital documentation of historical sources.
