Design and construction of artificial photosynthetic systems for the conversion of solar energy to fuels

The research activities of Dr. Georgios Charalambidis involve the design and development of solar driven artificial photosynthetic catalytic systems. Artificial photosynthesis is the process that enables light-induced chemical transformation of abundant feedstocks such as water and carbon dioxide (CO2) into a large variety of chemicals with low environmental impact. Our objective is the synthesis of appropriately decorated molecular complexes, based on abundant, low cost and environmentally friendly elements, that can be utilized as photosensitizers or catalysts towards the development of efficient photocatalytic hydrogen production or CO2 reduction systems. For the implementation of this scope various approaches are employed, including homogeneous catalytic systems, heterogenous systems based on self-assembling nanostructures and dye-sensitized photocatalytic systems (DSPs) based on TiO2 nanoparticles. Furthermore, our research interests include the detailed characterization of the synthesized derivatives regarding their structural and physicochemical characteristics using various methods such as NMR, infrared, absorption and emission spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry and cyclic voltammetry.
