Thin film metal oxides especially of the post transition metals are excellent candidates, for chemical electrosensors for the detection of toxic and explosive gases as well as photocatalysts for the oxidation of organic pollutants in air and water.
In our laboratory we use the sol-gel method for the preparation of pure or doped metal oxides thin films (TiO2, NiO, CuO, ZnO, SnO, etc. doped with Au, Pt, etc.) and we study them as gas sensors. The effect of the dopant nanoparticles as a catalyst and the effect of the thermal treating on gas sensing are investigated.
Moreover, TiO2 films doped or undoped, are tested as photocatalyst and the role of thermal treatment, doping and porosity in their performance are investigated.
