CLOSEJANE 2 – The 2nd Joint Action on Networks of Expertise on Cancer “Building EU Networks of Expertise on Cancer Together”
The second Joint Action (JA) of the EU on Networks of Expertise on Cancer (JANE-2) was launched in Milan, Italy, on January 28-29, 2025. The project is a follow-up of the JA JANE (2022-2024) (https://jane-project.eu) and is coordinated by Italy through the Fondazione IRCCS Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Milan, involving 121 partners from 29 European countries and co-financed by the European Union (EU) with 40.5 million euros. Greece is represented in JANE-2 by the National Hellenic Research Foundation (NHRF) and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) as participating institutions.
The objective of the Joint Action is to establish seven Networks of Expertise (NoEs) on cancer in the EU, implementing the recommendations of the 2021 Europe’s Beating Cancer Plan (EBCP).
The Networks bring together the highest expertise with the view of improving EU cooperation in the fight against cancer and they will focus on the following areas:
- NoE: Complex and poor-prognosis cancers
- NoE: Palliative care
- NoE: Survivorship
- NoE: Personalised primary and secondary prevention
- NoE: Omics technologies
- NoE: Hi-tech medical resources
- NoE: Adolescents and young adult with cancer
The new Networks of Expertise will provide services to the whole European oncology community, putting patients at the centre. These include clinical practice guidelines and recommendations, quality of care criteria, educational support, research promotion and support to patient advocates.
Since the JANE-2 constitutes a flagship EU Joint Action in the health sector, the Commissioner for Health and Animal Welfare Olivér Várhelyi said: ‘This is one of the biggest Joint Actions on cancer, with 40.5 million Euros in funding from the EU4Health Programme. Seven Networks of Expertise were conceived under its first phase. Now, the second phase will bring them to life. These Networks gather the best minds and expertise and drive progress in areas that matter to patients. They will add an array of services and tools, help empower through education and promote research.’
